Pecan sits in an odd spot most pitmasters overlook: technically a hickory, but milder and sweeter than the hickory pellets one shelf over. That makes it one of the more useful all-purpose woods on a pellet grill, assertive enough to actually flavor the meat and forgiving enough not to ruin a shorter cook the way straight hickory can. We compared the pecan pellets worth buying in 2026 on what’s actually in the bag, flavor, and price per pound.

Quick Answer

Lumber Jack Pecan Blend is the best pecan wood pellet for smoking in 2026. It’s the one mainstream pecan bag with a published recipe (40% pecan, 60% red oak, per retailer listings), made from whole trees including the bark, for $18.99 per 20 lb direct. Bear Mountain Pecan and Traeger Pecan cost $19.99 per 20 lb direct, but both are base-wood blends: Bear Mountain’s FAQ says its flavored pellets use an alder or oak base, and Traeger calls its pecan a “balanced blend of hardwoods”. The cheapest bag is Pit Boss Pecan Blend at $12.99 per 20 lb direct. Pecan belongs to the same Carya genus as hickory, per Bradley Smoker’s wood guide, which is why the two taste related even though pecan burns noticeably milder.

Last updated October 31, 2026: this page previously ranked “Bear Mountain 100% Pecan” first and called both it and “Traeger 100% Pecan” pure pecan with no filler. Neither brand’s own pages support that. Bear Mountain’s FAQ says only its Oak and Alder pellets are 100% single species, and Traeger’s Pecan page describes a hardwood blend with no percentage. We re-ranked the list, re-priced every bag from the brands’ own stores, and added a per-pound table.

Prices from bbqlumberjack.com, bearmountainbbq.com, traeger.com, and pitboss-grills.com product listings, checked October 31, 2026. Composition from each brand’s own product page or FAQ. The 40/60 Lumber Jack ratio comes from retailer listings, because Lumber Jack’s own page says only “pecan and red oak”.

1. Lumber Jack Pecan Blend: Best Overall

Lumber Jack Pecan Blend

Best overall · pecan + red oak (40/60) · $18.99 / 20 lb direct
  • The only pecan pellet here with a published ratio: 40% pecan, 60% red oak, per retailer listings.
  • Lumber Jack makes its pellets from whole trees chipped green, bark included, rather than from leftover sawdust, per its own product description.
  • The red oak base burns steadily, which carries the smoke over a long pork butt or brisket.
  • $18.99 for 20 lb on Lumber Jack's own store. Retailers often sell it for less.

Lumber Jack takes the top spot because you know what you’re buying. Lumber Jack’s own page says the Pecan Blend is “packed with pecan and red oak” from whole trees, and retailer listings put the split at 40% pecan. Bear Mountain and Traeger also blend their pecan with other woods, but they don’t publish the ratio. On a long cook, the oak base gives the smoke staying power, and the pecan share still adds a nutty-sweet note.

2. Bear Mountain Pecan: Milder, Cleaner Smoke

Bear Mountain Pecan

Milder smoke · pecan on an alder or oak base · $19.99 / 20 lb direct
  • Bear Mountain describes its pecan as stronger than fruit woods but milder than hickory or mesquite.
  • Its FAQ says flavored pellets use alder or oak as a base wood "depending on the region", for a more consistent burn. Only its Oak and Alder pellets are 100% single species.
  • $19.99 for 20 lb direct from bearmountainbbq.com (in stock October 31, 2026).
  • Bear Mountain says its pellets work in all brands and models of pellet grill.

Bear Mountain is a good bag for poultry and vegetables, where a lighter pecan smoke is the point. Just don’t buy it expecting pure pecan. If your bag uses an alder base, expect a softer smoke than Lumber Jack’s oak-based blend. Bear Mountain doesn’t print which base a given bag uses.

3. Traeger Pecan: Widest Availability

Traeger Pecan (PEL314)

Widest availability · hardwood blend · $19.99 / 20 lb on traeger.com
  • Traeger's product copy calls it a "premium, balanced blend of hardwoods" and gives no pecan percentage.
  • Rated 4.46 out of 5 from 37 reviews on traeger.com (October 31, 2026).
  • Stocked at most big-box stores and grill dealers that carry Traeger.
  • Works in any brand of pellet grill, despite the Traeger name on the bag.

If you run out of pellets the night before a cook, Traeger’s Pecan is the bag you’re most likely to find on a shelf nearby. At $19.99 per 20 lb, it costs the same as Bear Mountain. Traeger settled a 2019 class action over its pellet flavor claims without admitting fault. Our Traeger pellets guide covers that case and every Traeger flavor.

4. Pit Boss Pecan Blend: Cheapest Per Pound

Pit Boss Pecan Blend

Cheapest per pound · pecan blend · $12.99 / 20 lb on pitboss-grills.com
  • $12.99 for 20 lb direct from Pit Boss, about $0.65 per pound.
  • Pit Boss describes it as a mild, nutty blend "similar to hickory" for poultry, beef, pork, seafood, vegetables, and cheese.
  • Widely stocked at Walmart, Lowe's, and Tractor Supply.
  • Works in any brand of pellet grill, despite the Pit Boss name on the bag.

Pit Boss’s Pecan Blend costs about a third less per pound than the other three bags. Like them, it doesn’t publish the pecan share. It’s the low-risk bag if you’re trying pecan for the first time, or if you burn through pellets fast on a big grill. If you own a Pit Boss Lexington or another Walmart-only Pit Boss, see our Pit Boss Lexington review for how fast a 15 lb hopper goes.

Want 100% pecan? Use a smoke tube

The only 100% pecan pellets we could verify were A-MAZE-N’s. Its pecan pellets are “made from 100% Pecan hardwood” with “no added fillers, binders, or oils”, per the listing Pit Boss carries. They come in 2 lb bags for smoke tubes and cold-smoke generators, at $4.99 ($2.50 per pound, out of stock at Pit Boss on October 31, 2026). Burning a tube of pure pecan alongside a regular blend in the hopper adds pecan flavor without filling the hopper with $2.50-per-pound pellets. See our best pellet grill smoke tube guide.

Pecan vs. hickory

PecanHickory
Botanical familySame genus as hickory (Carya)Carya
FlavorNutty, sweet, mellowerBold, bacon-like, more assertive
Risk of oversmokingLow, forgiving on shorter cooksHigher, can turn bitter if overused
Best forPoultry, pork, ribs, balanced brisketBeef, pork butt, longer heavy cooks

Pecan and hickory are close enough botanically that the flavor overlap is real, not marketing: pecan trees belong to the same Carya genus as hickory, per Bradley Smoker’s wood guide. What separates them on the grill is intensity. Hickory brings a sharper, more assertive smoke that can turn bitter if overdone. Pecan adds real smoke without that risk, which is why it works with a wider range of proteins. If you want hickory’s flavor family with more margin for error, pecan is the wood to use. Keep in mind that every hopper bag here is a blend, so the base wood (oak or alder) shapes the smoke as much as the pecan does.

The bottom line

For most people, Lumber Jack Pecan Blend is the best pecan pellet of 2026. You know what’s in it, the oak base carries a long cook, and it costs $18.99 per 20 lb. For a milder smoke on poultry, buy Bear Mountain Pecan. For the bag you can find anywhere, buy Traeger Pecan. For the lowest price per pound, buy Pit Boss Pecan Blend.
